How to Create Waterfall Chart in Tableau

Waterfall Chart is a widely used financial chart model, which is used to understand how the primary value of something is influenced by the other in-between values. Usually, waterfall chart is used for various analytical objectives. Financial institutions employ Waterfall Charts to calculate the relationship between the net value and the loss and gain incurred in the process.

The uses of Waterfall Charts extends to inventory analysis, performance analysis, and quantitative analysis as well. Moreover, the collective effect of the intermediary values can be identified and tabulated.

A waterfall chart usually is like this:

Now the first thing we need to do is to create a graph for the upcoming midway values and we have to determine a place by drawing up rows and columns. For instance, if we want to depict the net revenue and expense of a particular organization, we need to pull up the revenue/expense measure onto the row and column shelf. And a quick table calculation would help to generate a total across the chart.

It is generally advisable to practice defining the Grand Total with the built-in potentials of Tableau. This will allow us to leap the previous step, but we will have to go about colouring the grand total bar or background a little bit differently. We need to generate an estimated place that is the sheer negative side of the revenue/expense amount to fill in the remaining bar. Now we need to place this estimation on the size shelf.

Eventually, create an estimated field to state the colour, and it is important to note that in this case, we mention the Total amount so that it will have a peculiar colour.

Pull this to the Running Sum calculation and fix the point to Dual Axis. Now the marks for the Arrow Location axis is visible to be moulded to a shape. This calculation can be made to the Shape shelf as well. And once the estimation applied in there, we can set the necessary arrows, in case we want them in addition to the colours fill-in. At last, we need to get the arrows to differ in size with the bar charts.

The standard size settings will likely not be accurate enough, so they should be modified a little. Click the arrow at the top-right and choose Edit Sizes from the size key. It is automatically set to default mode to vary By Range and the Mark Size range to begin at the utmost left side.  Once we set the Start value for the range to the lowest point of zero, tweak the top end of the scope to become the equivalent of the view and size options.

There are numerous things can be accomplished like this with Tableau. Its importance is yielding more and more popularity to Tableau applications all across various business sectors.
